Colorado Winter Engagement Session | Callie and Ben

It’s not every year that we get winter in May, but it just so happened when it was time to photograph Callie and Ben for their Colorado engagement session.

After a few conversations about the best location to go to accommodate their two dogs, Lexi and Smoky, we decided on The Trading Post Trail outside of the Red Rock Amphitheater in Morrison, Colorado. I absolutely love photographing at this location, as the trademark red rock formations are a photographer’s dream! The last time I had a chance to come out this way was for Sarah and Jake’s engagement session, who, ironically, were also blessed with the gift of snow. It looks like it’s becoming some kind of very cold tradition!

The snow was really coming down when I met Callie and Ben in the parking lot at one of the starts of The Trading Post Trail, and we started their engagement session with a cautious umbrella. But the umbrella didn’t last long, and these two lovebirds really embraced the beautiful weather we were having. Lexi was less impressed with the snowfall, while Smoky was absolutely thrilled! I’ll let you take a wild guess at who was who.

The two decided on a more formal first outfit, with navy blue highlights. Callie wore a beautiful curve-highlighting navy dress with an elephant necklace, while Ben decided on a matching navy blue button-up and black suit jacket. Lexi even came out dressed to the nines in her white sweater and pink skirt. I’m sure that both of them were freezing, so their second, more casual outfit choice allowed for a bit more warmth, and near the end, Callie even ended up layering. I always encourage my couples to bring more than one outfit to an engagement session, as it really allows for some diversity in the images when we’re not changing it up too much location-wise. The couple also brought a very colorful blanket from home, and we did some wrapped-up shots in the snow! While this undoubtedly kept them warm, I love when couples bring blankets or keepsakes from home that represent them and their relationship to use during the photoshoot! I occasionally have blankets of my own available, but nothing beats a keepsake item in your photos!

I loved that Callie and Ben were able to really enjoy the winter Colorado weather we spontaneously had for their engagement session with the Red Rocks, and I have to say I would not have changed it for the world! I cannot wait to see these two the next time and spend more time with not only them but their amazing dogs.
